[That...relaxes Newt a bit. He still doesn't look 100% comfortable, but at least he's not going to run for it at the slightest twitch] Oh. Jeez, man, don't scare me like that!
[he huffs, shaking his head] Right, okay. Let's see what you've got for me.
[ he gives a small nod before reaching into his jacket -- not making any sudden movements, just in case newt's still skittish. launching straight into the explanation: ]
-- I fought with one of the people attacking the housing area, and they dropped a vial of liquid, among other things. I wasn't able to catch it before it hit the ground, but I did collect the pieces immediately afterward. [ there's the faint crunch of glass pieces as he carefully pulls out a little bundle of clean fabric. ] Apparently, another attacker attempted to force-feed the contents of a similar vial to someone. So -- I'd like to know what exactly the vial contained. And, if possible, if there's any way to combat the effects of it, in case the same chemical is ever put to use again.
[ he offers the little bundle forth for newt to take. ]
[Newt frowns at that, but does reach out to take the bundle, opening it up a little to inspect what's inside as he talks.]
Were you able to salvage any of what was in the vial? I mean...I might be able to get something off the glass, but it'll be a long shot. It depends on what was in it.
[ kakyoin purses his lips at that, brows furrowed. this is starting to dip into information that he hasn't told anyone else yet, and he chooses his words more carefully. ]
I did manage to obtain some of the liquid itself as well, yes. But -- my room tends to be frequented by a very nosy intruder, and given the possibility that it could be something dangerous, I was reluctant to leave it unguarded in West Haven. I hid it somewhere very inaccessible up in North Haven.
[ hands folded behind his back, he pauses before continuing levelly. ]
... I'd prefer not to have to bring it here. If necessary, I can and will, but I'd like to request that you make an attempt off the glass first, please.
[Newt huffs, then, looking a bit disgruntled] On the one hand, I understand hiding it in North for safekeeping, especially with all the crap that happens around here. I get it. But honestly? My results will be a lot more accurate if I have some of the actual liquid.
From the glass alone, I could maybe get an imprint at best, but how close is that gonna be to the actual liquid? I dunno. I don't know what could've evaporated from the glass since the time you got it.
I'll give it a shot, but without the actual liquid, I can't guarantee accuracy.
[ he narrows his eyes, ducking his gaze briefly; clearly, the situation isn't ideal, but kakyoin does eventually give a grudging nod. ]
Very well. I'll defer to your judgement in this case.
[ 'in this case.' he's never been the type to mask his wariness, and he deliberately makes it clear that he's only reluctantly trusting newt. but still, it's not like he has many options. with the decision made, he loosens the tension in his shoulders, gesturing vaguely as he continues. ]
I'll retrieve it -- the sample of liquid -- at the first available opportunity and bring it straight to you, to avoid any unexpected interference. Where can I find you during the day?
[Newt is not offended at all by the wariness--for the most part, it goes right over his head. He looks pleased when Kakyoin agrees to get more the of the liquid]
Awesome! I'll usually be in the lab--it's just a stones through that way--[and Newt gestures out into the ruins]--in the ruins. You can come now, if you want to see it. If I'm not there, I'll definitely be in Block 1. And if I'm not there either, just call me or something.
If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to confirm where your lab is so I can head there without instructions in the future. I imagine you wouldn't want to divulge its location on the phone, and I promise to keep that information secret.
[ understandable that newt would want to keep the lab's location secret from yao, especially since he does seem to understand the importance of discretion. ]
Sure, that's fine. C'mon, it's over this way--[and Newt's turning and heading off into the ruins, expecting Kakyoin to follow. Once he does and they're walking, he'll ask--]
So, did we ever find out WHY those people were attacking the housing area, or what?
[ he follows briskly after newt, trailing just a few paces behind him, glancing around to make sure he remembers any landmarks. ]
... who knows what Yao is ever thinking. [ a half-hearted murmur under his breath before he answers a little more clearly. ] But I've heard that the attack was ultimately orchestrated by Yao, perhaps in order to set us against the rebels.
